Valencia have accelerated their search for a right-back after Dimitri Foulquier’s knee injury and Thierry Rendall’s fitness issues, with free agent Renzo Saravia emerging as the leading option. Tribuna Deportiva first named the Argentine as a possibility.
Saravia, 32, is an Argentina international right-back who mixed defensive edge with attacking intent during his peak years. He is without a club after leaving Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, and featured regularly for Argentina in 2019, including at the Copa América.
Known for his athleticism and up-and-down intensity on the flank, he offers width and looks to combine with wingers and inside midfielders. That profile was evident at Racing Club and once drew interest from European sides.
His current level is short of that earlier peak, which helps explain his free-agent status. Inconsistent spells and questions over decision-making in defensive phases, particularly against stronger opponents, have punctuated his career.
Foulquier underwent successful surgery on his left knee in Valencia on Thursday 12 February, performed by orthopaedic surgeon Ignacio Muñoz Criado under the supervision of Pedro López, head of the club’s medical services.
The problems do not end there on the right. Rendall, the first-choice in that role, still has discomfort and is highly unlikely to make the derby against Levante, and could be out for longer. The staff are weighing emergency solutions for a match with added emotion.
