Valencia are pushing to add Atlético de Madrid centre-back José Giménez on loan as injuries expose their thin squad.

According to Diario AS, the Mestalla club made their move in the final hours of the window. They need reinforcements across the pitch, with only the full-backs and goalkeeper offering two credible starters.

Giménez, 31, is under contract until 2028 but is not an option for Diego Simeone at present. He has 99 Uruguay caps and, after Benfica sounded him out earlier in the summer, Sevilla FC and particularly Deportivo de La Coruña are now closest to an agreement.

Atlético have opened the door for him to accept the loan that suits him after 13 years at the club. Holding a Spanish passport, he is viewed as a dependable addition.

With De Haas and Copete injured and Diakhaby frequently sidelined, shoring up the defence is essential for Valencia. The sticking point is his salary, and the club have asked him to take a pay cut to make a season-long loan feasible.

The decision now rests with the defender, who had been leaning towards the Riazor offer. Whether Valencia’s late push turns his head towards the Mediterranean remains to be seen.
