Valencia enter a pivotal run of three games in nine days, starting at Sevilla on Friday, with injuries stripping Carlos Corberán’s options.

They then go to Vitoria to face Alavés on Tuesday, before hosting Real Sociedad at Mestalla on Sunday, 20 September. According to AS, La Liga then pauses until 11 October for international fixtures.

Corberán has cancelled days off after Sunday’s damaging loss to Barcelona, which has left team and coach in a difficult spot. Mouctar Diakhaby suffered a fresh setback in that match and will not travel, adding to the absentees for the Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Guido Rodríguez and Justin De Haas are training away from the group as they recover, and their involvement on Friday is practically ruled out. Club fitness staff are focused on the Argentine, who was injured on 25 September during the match against Betis.

Luis Rioja has not returned to the pitch for a week and a half after featuring briefly against Betis and suffering a relapse. Copete, Foulquier, Diakhaby, Diego López and Sadiq remain on individual programmes, with no return expected in the coming weeks.

Corberán is preparing to reshuffle his defence again, working with Arnau Martínez alongside Tárrega at centre-back and Maffeo at right-back. Arnau and Tárrega are the only fit senior centre-halves, with Pepelu also used as a third central defender this season.
