Vasco have agreed a deal to sign Atlético Nacional forward Marino Hinestroza, 23, gazumping Boca Juniors for the Colombian.
According to Globo.com, Boca had lined up a move worth US$ five million plus a sell-on, but Atlético Nacional did not sign and left them waiting. Vasco seized the opening and closed within 72 hours.
Vasco’s proposal was superior across clauses, with the Colombians viewing it as more advantageous on fee, payment terms and sell-on.
Fernando Diniz repeatedly phoned Hinestroza to outline his plan and how a switch to Brazil could aid his development. He considers the winger ready for the next step and among Colombia’s most promising talents.
He likened Hinestroza’s profile to Andrés Gómez, a quick, energetic, technically sound wide player. Vasco tracked him closely last year and tried to sign him in the mid-year window.
Those calls pointed to Jhon Arias’s rise under Diniz at Fluminense, before a move to Wolverhampton and prominence with Colombia, which impressed Hinestroza’s camp. They also noted Andrés Gómez’s progress in Brazil and how he and Cuesta earned recalls to Néstor Lorenzo’s squads after cementing starting roles at Vasco.
Vasco’s hierarchy had monitored Hinestroza since his standout Libertadores campaign. Fluminense and Botafogo were in the frame, but costs were high, with Atlético seeking US$ eight million and Kevin Serna from Fluminense. Six months on, Vasco are signing him for significantly less.
Last year Vasco also brought in Colombian Andrés Gómez, who became a standout starter and even displaced Vegetti.
