Victor Boniface is showing promising signs at Bayer Leverkusen as he tries to recapture form after a bruising loan at Werder Bremen and knee surgery in January. The 25-year-old returned this summer after just 11 Bundesliga appearances without a goal for Bremen last season.

Head coach Carles Martínez has noted the striker’s improvement. “He knows what he has to do. I’m pushing him as well. It’s getting better. His quality is obvious,” Martínez said, as quoted by Kicker.

Pre-season has offered encouragement, with Boniface looking sharper in possession and more assured in tight areas. He remains behind Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane in the centre-forward pecking order.
