West Brom have confirmed winger Mikey Johnston faces a prolonged absence after a complex setback in his ankle recovery.

Albion director of medical Tony Strudwick said in a club statement that Johnston will be out for an extended period with no specific timeline, though further surgery is not required.

Johnston, 27, fractured his ankle in February at Oxford in James Morrison’s first game as caretaker, then underwent surgery that ended his season.

After summer rehabilitation he featured in friendlies, playing 45 minutes against Notts County and Coventry and 25 against Peterborough, before 30 minutes in the EFL Cup at Rotherham.

He then felt pain and scans showed a further injury. The club consulted two leading ankle specialists and put him on a non-surgical treatment plan.

Before the setback he was among Albion’s leading creative players in a struggling side last season and was understood to have attracted interest during the summer window.

Morrison had planned to use him centrally as a No.10 this season. The Republic of Ireland international, signed for £3 million in summer 2024 after a successful loan, has two years left on his deal, is one appearance short of 100 for the club and has scored 12 goals.
