Jamie Vardy has been linked with a move to the Premier League amid interest from West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday

West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday are both facing competition from Everton in the race to secure the signature of Jamie Vardy.

According to The Sun, the Premier League side are considering an approach for the 39-year-old as they deal with the fallout of their disastrous end to the transfer window.

The former Leicester City star is currently a free agent, and can be signed despite the market closing last Tuesday.

Vardy spent last season in Italy with Cremonese following his exit from the King Power Stadium, but their relegation led to him departing after one year.

The ex-England international contributed seven goals and two assists from 29 appearances in Serie A.

But he could now make a return to English football, albeit no decision has yet been made on his next move.

It’s believed that Vardy is now an option for Everton after their disappointing end to the transfer window.

The Toffees failed in their bid to sign Folarin Balogun from AS Monaco on the final day, despite an agreement with the Ligue 1 side.

And the Merseyside outfit also agreed to sell forward Beto, leaving David Moyes short of potential options to lead the line between now and 1 January.

This has led the Scottish coach to turn to the free agent market, with Vardy emerging as a possible signing.

West Ham were linked with a move for the 39-year-old in August, but a move has yet to materialise.

Vardy is also a boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan, which has fuelled speculation that he could sign for the Owls.

Vardy has also been linked with a move to MLS and Brazil, with the forward leaving his options open for the time being.

Some Sheffield Wednesday fans are still optimistic that they can convince Vardy to make the move to his boyhood club.

While a deal to sign for the Owls seems unlikely at this stage, supporters are still holding out hope an agreement can be sealed.

But others are more pessimistic, and believe that it simply can’t be done due to the restrictions currently placed on the club by the EFL.

Fans have claimed that the only chance Sheffield Wednesday have of signing Vardy now is if he is willing to agree to a deal that fits their transfer restrictions.

Sheffield Wednesday return to action on Saturday with a trip to face Peterborough United in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Everton move could be what gets Jamie Vardy off the market

A move to Everton is certainly appealing for Vardy, as it gives him a chance to continue competing at a top flight level at the age of 39.

The forward scored nine times for Leicester in 2024/25, but the club still suffered relegation to the Championship anyway.

There’s no doubt he could still perform to a decent standard in the top flight based on his last couple of seasons, and it’s clear Everton have been left a little short in attack.

Even a short-term deal to January might be enough to convince Vardy to sign, putting Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham on the back foot in the bid for his signature.
