The visitors got off to the perfect start when Barnabas Varga scored inside a few minutes, and they doubled their lead when Roland Sallai headed home.

However, Evan Ferguson pulled one back, with Sallai then sent off, and Adam Idah rescued a point for the Irish in stoppage time in this crucial World Cup qualifier as the nations battle to reach the major tournament next year.

Even though Hungary hung on following Sallai’s red card, they had been dominant in the first half, and Albion’s Styles was key to that in the middle of the park.

The 25-year-old has impressed at left-back for his club under Ryan Mason this season, but he was all-action in midfield, and he registered an assist for Varga’s opener.

Furthermore, Styles quickly won the ball back, was comfortable in possession, and he gave the platform for the Hungarians to control the game for large parts of the first half, and they really could’ve been out of sight had it not been for Caoimhin Kelleher, who was named man of the match.

West Brom supporters call for Callum Styles to be given a chance in midfield

Despite Albion’s excellent start to the season, with the Baggies winning three and drawing one of their first four games, many are wondering whether Styles should be given an opportunity further up the pitch.

He has shown himself to be a good left-back, but Styles’ performance in Dublin was assured, and he could add something to the midfield for the Championship side.

So, when discussing the possibility of changing things, some Albion fans explained that they think Styles is ‘wasted’ in his current position on the pitch…

Meanwhile, other Albion fans were quick to praise Styles for his versatility, as he has shown this season that he is capable in both roles for club and country.

It was also suggested that Mason should give Styles a chance in midfield over Jayson Molumby moving forward following his display for Hungary.

Callum Styles' versatility will help West Brom this season

You can understand why some West Brom fans want Styles to be given a chance to play in midfield, as if he can do it on the international stage in a big game for his country, then he could make a big contribution to Albion.

But, the reality is that Mason is not going to make any changes, in the short-term at least, because Albion have had a brilliant start under his guidance, and Styles is part of a strong defensive unit with his performances at left-back.

Nevertheless, you can be sure that Mason has noted Styles' display for Hungary, and he will know that it's an option at some point in the future.

With suspensions and injuries, you need a big squad to compete in the Championship, and Styles' ability to play well at full-back or in midfield could prove to be valuable over the coming months.
