Speaking to the Chelsea official website at full time, he explained that his manager Enzo Maresca had called for unity at the break after Moises Caicedo’s red card.

“He just said it’s about togetherness. When we’re a man down we’ve got to be together and show that on the pitch. That is the time we need to stick together,” Chalobah explained.

“I’m very happy, very proud of the boys. In situations like that, it’s not easy to play when you’re a man down, and I thought the boys dug in really deep. Our performance level didn’t change even when we were a man down. So I’m very proud to have come away with a point.

“We know this type of game is huge, not just for us but for the fans and for the club. We showed our level, showed we can go toe-to-toe with the league leaders. We have to be proud of the boys, going down to 10 men didn’t affect us, we kept our heads up high.”

For a side that’s seemed very fragile mentally at times in the last few years, this point was about more than just the table – it showed real growth from them.

Chalobah also praised the set piece routine that saw James set him up for Chelsea’s opening goal, claiming that it was something the Blues worked on “every day” in training.

James himself also spoke post game, and his words about what Chelsea wanted from the game show how much expectations are starting to rise at the club, despite the manager’s attempts to keep things calm and play them down.
