The former Wednesday boss was rumoured to be returning to Hillsborough, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has now revealed that he is "not sure" whether he'll be able to make his return to Hillsborough this Wednesday to see the Owls take on Middlesbrough.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently embroiled in a relegation battle in the Championship, but their main worries are coming off-field, as owner Dejphon Chansiri is still in charge and, in many eyes, is running Wednesday into the ground financially.

Carvalhal represented the few positives of the Thai businessman's 10 years in charge at Hillsborough, where the Owls registered back-to-back play-off campaigns with the Portuguese boss in the dugout, alongside a run to the EFL Cup's quarter-finals in the 2015/16 campaign.

Carvalhal tweeted on Sunday night that he was looking forward to returning to Sheffield and possibly seeing the Owls in action against the current second-placed side, Middlesbrough. However, an issue with work has seen the 59-year-old take a U-turn on his decision.

For many modern Wednesday fans, Carlos Carvalhal is a well-respected figure. The Owls may have failed in the play-offs in both of his full seasons in charge at Hillsborough, but he's credited with some of the more memorable nights in the past decade.

Unfortunately, Owls fans are going to have to wait to give him a hero's welcome, as, contrary to his earlier tweet, Carvalhal doesn't look like he will be attending the midweek Championship clash at Hillsborough.

The 59-year-old outlined on X that no one had invited him to the Wednesday game, indicating that he was just going to attend the game as a fan after meeting for lunch with Lee Bulen, his assistant manager throughout his time at Hillsborough.

Since then, however, he's been offered to work for Portuguese outlet SportTV's coverage of Nottingham Forest's UEFA Europa League clash with Porto, where he spent a year of his playing career.

Due to travel, it seems that he will be unable to stay for the Wednesday match, which will be seen as a shame for the Owls fans who are in attendance.

Plenty of Wednesday fans congregated in Carlos Carvalhal's comments section to react to the news that he'll be missing the Championship clash between themselves and Middlesbrough.

The majority of fans are seemingly happy with this decision, as many were planning on boycotting the game to try and stop money flowing into Chansiri's pockets, similarly to their midweek EFL Cup ties against Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.

Many fans are hoping that Carvalhal can visit the club once more, once they're finally out of the iron grasp of Chansiri, where he'll be greeted by tens of thousands of grateful Wednesday fans.

But for now, it's about ensuring that the club is still there for him to return to in a few years.
