Wilder Insists Sheffield United Must Be Patient; Blades “Have to Move On” After Transfer Blow | OneFootball

Sheffield United made the perfect start to their competitive campaign on Sunday afternoon, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Mansfield Town in the first round of the EFL Cup at the One Call Stadium.

The Blades completely dominated proceedings in Nottinghamshire and rarely looked troubled, securing their place in the second round with a professional display that will provide Chris Wilder with plenty of encouragement ahead of next weekend’s Championship opener against Birmingham City.

United wasted little time in making their superiority count. The visitors opened the scoring inside the first four minutes after a poor clearance from the Mansfield defence presented Sheffield United with an opportunity. Joe Rothwell saw his first two efforts blocked, but the midfielder continued to follow up and eventually saw his third attempt find the back of the net via Patrick Bamford. Mansfield immediately appealed for an offside decision, but their protests were dismissed, allowing United to take an early lead.

The Blades continued to control the contest after going ahead, moving the ball confidently and limiting the League One side to very little in the way of attacking opportunities. United began the second half in a similar fashion, continuing to press for a second goal. Sydie Peck came close when his effort took a deflection and flew behind for a corner as the visitors continued to turn the screw.

Eventually, their pressure was rewarded with 20 minutes remaining. Peck delivered an inviting corner into the Mansfield penalty area and Mark McGuinness rose highest to power a header beyond the goalkeeper, doubling United’s advantage and putting the result beyond serious doubt.

With a two-goal cushion established, Sheffield United began to find even more space in the Mansfield defence and played with increasing confidence.

Tom Cannon was presented with an excellent opportunity to add a third, but Mansfield goalkeeper Lewis produced an excellent save to deny the striker and keep the hosts within touching distance.

There was no denying United in the closing stages. The Blades broke forward at speed down the right flank, with substitutes Romelle Donovan and Ryan Oné combining brilliantly to open up the Mansfield defence. Their excellent work created a simple opportunity for Callum O’Hare, who made no mistake from close range to complete the scoring.

Speaking after the game, Wilder admitted that he is pleased with the current squad but believes United need further additions if they are to challenge at the top end of the Championship.

“I’m happy with the group, but I’m always trying to improve it,” Wilder said to SUTV.

“I think we’re two or three players off being really, really competitive. I think we will be competitive from what I’ve seen so far this season, but to take that next step, then hopefully we can do the business… but we have to be patient with it.”

That patience will be particularly important given the impending departure of Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder missed Sunday’s trip to Mansfield, with his absence further fuelling speculation that his Sheffield United career was coming to an end. Those expectations have now been strengthened, with Hamer set to return to former club Coventry City in a deal worth £6 million plus add-ons.

Hamer’s departure is a significant blow for the Blades, particularly given his influence in the final third. Since joining Sheffield United in August 2023, the Dutchman has established himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players. Across all competitions, Hamer has scored 21 goals and registered 26 assists for United, giving him an impressive 47 goal involvements during his time at Bramall Lane.

Wilder: We Have to Move On

Wilder acknowledged the significance of losing such an influential figure but insisted that the club must now move forward.

Asked whether he expected Hamer to complete his move to Coventry over the coming days, Wilder replied: “Yeah, I do, 100%.”

“That’s Gus. So we have to move on; everybody, me, supporters, players. He was a special player for us, he’s a big player, we all understand that… but the decision for Gus to go, there’s a lot of sides to it. I don’t think it’s always as straightforward as people think it is.”

The Sheffield United boss also made it clear that the club understands the importance of replacing Hamer with a player capable of making a similar impact. “Steve (Bettis) and the owners know we have to replace Gus with a really top player,” Wilder added.

The manager also discussed the wider transfer situation, with the Blades having already lost Hamer and Andre Brooks this summer. “We’ve lost Gus, Andre went, so we have to move on,” Wilder explained.

Blades Boss on Patience With Transfers

Wilder believes United may need to wait before the best opportunities become available. “The situation is loans; we have to be really patient. If we want good loans, we’re gonna have to be really patient… clubs want players to go out on permanent deals, and when they know that they can’t, then the loans become available.”

In other news, the Blades have reportedly accelerated their attempts to sign Leicester City defender Harry Souttar, for around £8 million.

For now, though, Wilder can take plenty of positives from the opening-day cup victory as United prepare to welcome Birmingham City to Bramall Lane on Saturday in the opening Championship fixture.
