Jack Marriott is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines following training injury
Wrexham have suffered a significant blow regarding Jack Marriott’s first team availability.
According to The Athletic, the forward is set to be absent for up to four months following a freak accident in training in the build-up to last weekend’s 1-0 win over Rotherham United.
The 30-year-old has been crucial to Phil Parkinson’s side so far in this League One season, bagging five goals from 10 appearances (all stats from Fbref).
However, he is now set to be out of action until 2025, which will come as a real blow to the Welsh side as they target promotion to the Championship.
Paul Mullin took his place in the team against the Millers, with his first minute strike sealing an important 1-0 win.
Marriott has been a key figure for Wrexham as part of their promising start to life back in League One.
The forward joined the Red Dragons at the end of the January transfer window earlier this calendar year, and played only a minor role in their automatic promotion from League Two last season.
The 30-year-old made 17 appearances in the fourth tier, only three of which came as a starter, scoring once.
However, he cemented himself as a key figure in Parkinson’s team at the start of this campaign, starting nine of their opening 10 games before suffering a broken leg.
The striker will reportedly have to undergo surgery as part of his recovery process, having suffered the injury while attempting a shot in training.
It is believed it could take up to four months for him to be match fit again, meaning he might not be back in the side until February, or even March.
Mullin’s return to goal-scoring form on Saturday will have come as a relief to Parkinson, with the 29-year-old bagging his first league goal of the campaign after coming into the side in place of Marriott.
Wrexham find themselves in the mix for an automatic promotion spot in these early stages of the campaign.
The Red Dragons are second in the table following their 1-0 win over Rotherham on Saturday.
The gap to leaders Birmingham City is only two points, albeit Wrexham have played a game more than their rivals, with Wycombe in third only three points back while also on a game fewer played.
Next up for Parkinson’s team is a clash at home against sixth place Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night in a 7.45pm kick-off.
Marriott made a strong start to the new season, scoring five goals in 10 games, so losing him for such a lengthy spell is a big blow.
Mullin stepped up on Saturday, showing that he can fill in for his injured teammate, but it remains to be seen whether he can keep that up over the next several weeks.
This will be a tricky one for Parkinson to manage, but the team have gotten off to a good start without Marriott by earning a win over Rotherham away from home.
If they can keep up their form until January, then the option is also there for a signing to be made in case Parkinson feels more firepower is needed in Marriott’s absence.
