Manchester United have had significant problems in the goalkeeping department for some years.

After over a decade of David de Gea as the first choice keeper, his release at the end of his contract sparked major change.

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir were brought in during the summer of 2023 but both players massively failed their auditions.

Onana has since been sent out on loan to Trabzonspor in Turkey and Bayindir lost his brief role as first choice keeper.

New summer signing Senne Lammens impressed during his first match at Sunderland and numerous fans would love to see him get an extended run as first choice keeper.

United still need help

Nonetheless, Lammens is still only 23 years old and in spite of a very promising debut, he will inevitably need time to grow and adapt to the English game.

Consequently, United have been linked to bringing in a more experienced keeper and it has been stated that they hold interest in FC Barcelona keeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

The German keeper has struggled for gametime this year with new signing Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny getting the opportunities to play so far.

There have been reports that Barcelona would consider swapping Marcus Rashford for Ter Stegen.

Nonetheless, there have been conflicting reports that Barcelona would be happy to keep the experienced German to provide depth to their keeping department.

Newcastle United interest

Even if Ter Stegen was allowed to leave, Man United would hardly be the only suitors.

Spanish outlet Fichajes report that, “Marc-André Ter Stegen is at a crossroads at FC Barcelona. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper has a contract until 2028, but his role within the club has changed, and now his possible transfer to Newcastle United will depend on three determining factors.”

These factors include his health, desire to change salary and role and finally, the asking price that FC Barcelona would put on his head.

The outlet claims there is certainly substance to the rumour as they state, “Newcastle United is already one of the clubs that has set its sights on Ter Stegen as a real target within the Premier League. Reports indicate that the Magpies have been offered the goalkeeper by the player’s agents.”

Moreover, “Ter Stegen’s experience and prestige make him an attractive prospect, not only as a goalkeeper but also as a leader.”
