The worry that gripped Vasco da Gama on Wednesday 17 has become a grim reality. Midfielder Mateus Carvalho left the warm-up for the final against Corinthians in tears, and detailed imaging on Thursday 18 confirmed a severe and complex injury to his left knee.
According to Atenção Vascaínos, scans identified a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, along with significant damage to the menisci and collateral ligaments. The extent of the trauma requires extensive surgical reconstruction.
The club moved quickly, with the player already undertaking pre-operative work with the Department of Health and Performance, DESP. The operation is set to take place soon, with initial treatment aimed at reducing swelling and preparing the joint.
The setback rules Carvalho out for a lengthy spell, abruptly ending his 2025 season. A return to action is projected only during 2026.
Team-mates and coaching staff are rallying around the youngster as he faces a demanding recovery.
