Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson is reported to have sent an emergency video message to staff after the Tyne-Wear defeat to Sunderland at St James’ Park, an attempt to steady internal morale. The Times reports that he contacted more than 500 employees soon after full time.
Newcastle led through Anthony Gordon before Chemsdine Talbi equalised, then Brian Brobbey struck in stoppage time to complete Sunderland’s turnaround. Celebrations erupted in the away end and the final whistle brought audible frustration among home fans.
The result carried added weight as the newly promoted Black Cats moved above their rivals in the Premier League table. From Sunderland’s perspective, it underlined their progress.
Inside the club, Hopkinson urged unity. He acknowledged the hurt, said adversity reveals character rather than defines it, referenced Vince Lombardi’s line about how you get up after being knocked down, and told staff they would have a tough day then rise again.
He added that the project is real, the journey is not linear, and while the setback feels heavy, it would not be carried for long. He said enthusiasm and conviction would remain undiminished.
The message appeared to reflect a club trying to regroup after a bruising derby. Scrutiny has also increased around head coach Eddie Howe after back-to-back derby defeats, while Régis Le Bris’s side have already secured safety with seven league games remaining.
