Sunderland have leaned into their Tyne-Wear derby win by aiming digs at Newcastle United on social media, intensifying the post-match fallout.
According to Sunderland Echo, Newcastle made the ideal start at St James’s Park when Anthony Gordon struck early, before Sunderland turned it around after the break to claim all three points. The comeback extended Newcastle’s winless Premier League run against their rivals to 11 matches.
Shortly after full-time, Sunderland updated their cover photo across platforms, selecting an image of travelling supporters celebrating inside St James’s Park. The picture included a banner referencing "Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army", a pointed nod to the hosts that sparked heavy online reaction.
They also posted Brian Brobbey’s winning goal, paired with Sam Fender’s Rein Me In, featuring Olivia Dean, a choice that underlined the singer’s Newcastle allegiance. The clip quickly gathered traction across their channels.
Frustration on Tyneside has grown, with scrutiny on Eddie Howe after consecutive derby defeats, a sharp contrast to the mood when he was lauded for Carabao Cup success. The debate over the team’s direction has deepened.
Howe said, "I am committed, fully committed". He admitted disappointment in himself and his recent delivery, described the Barcelona game as very tough and this defeat as tougher, and stressed he would shoulder blame rather than deflect it onto his players.
