Pep Guardiola voiced his frustration at the decisions that cost Manchester City victory in their 2-2 Champions League draw with Monaco, describing the late penalty conceded as “unfair.”

The decisive moment came in the 90th minute when Eric Dier converted from the spot after going down under a high foot from Nico Gonzalez. While replays appeared to show the Argentine touched the ball first, the on-field decision of no penalty was overturned following a VAR review.

“It’s an unfair free-kick. Then we concede a penalty when we touch the ball first, not the opponent. No intention. It is what it is,” Guardiola said after the game, reported by Sky Sports.

City had dominated throughout the evening, striking the woodwork twice and registering 18 shots, yet failed to capitalise before Dier’s late equaliser. For Guardiola, the frustration lay not only in the decision but also in his side’s inability to turn superiority into victory.

“We created chances, they defended deep, tighter than expected, but we adjusted and played really good,” Guardiola said. “When it’s close, you have to defend, and we take the point. Step by step we’ll be better, but tonight many things went against us.”

Manchester City will next face Brentford away from home in the Premier League.
