Chelsea confirmed the appointment of Alonso on Sunday, and the Spaniard has signed a four year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Unlike Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, Alonso has been given the title of manager rather than head coach, signifying a great degree of control.

Xabi Alonso on the Chelsea job

It’s seen as a real coup that Chelsea have been able to land a manager of Alonso’ standing and calibre, with the 44-year-old realistically the best manager the Blues could have appointed.

Trevoh Chalobah has spoken of his excitement about working under Alonso, and the appointment is understood to have gone down well with the players.

Alonso wasn’t present at Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Tottenham on Tuesday night, and he’s not expected to be at Sunderland on Sunday in the final game of the season.

The size of the task at Chelsea is huge, and Alonso will certainly have his work cut out, but in a brief interview he shared his thoughts.

“I’m excited and ready to get to work,” he told El Chiringuito as quoted via X.com.

Alonso will officially begin work on July 1st 2026, and will no doubt already be thinking about next season, and the summer transfer window, both of which are vital for Chelsea.

Silva would give Chelsea the experience, leadership and winning mentality they are missing in the squad, but at this stage it’s hard to imagine a move materialising.
