FC Bayern could make another personnel cut this winter, with top talent Javier Fernandez on the verge of a temporary departure from the German record champions according to the latest reports

The 19-year-old is considered highly talented internally, but the next step in his development is apparently no longer set to take place at Säbener Strasse. According to Sky, Bayern are looking closely at loaning out the Spanish midfielder in order to give him regular match practice at a higher level

Fernandez moved to Munich from Spain in the summer of 2023 and has mainly played for FC Bayern’s second team since then. However, his time in Munich was repeatedly marked by setbacks. Several serious injuries slowed the central midfielder down and prevented him from developing continuously. Nevertheless, Bayern held on to him and recently extended his contract, which originally ran until 2026, ahead of schedule until 2028

Strong competition blocks the next step

The situation is currently complicated for Fernandez in sporting terms. Although he has been in Vincent Kompany’s professional squad several times this season, it has not been enough for him to make an appearance so far. The competition in central midfield is fierce, with Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Leon Goretzka and youngster Tom Bischof clearly defining the hierarchy. For a player who urgently needs rhythm after several injuries, the chances of being called up are correspondingly low

In light of this, FC Bayern are now apparently pushing ahead with a loan deal with the aim of placing Fernandez in an environment where he can play regularly at a high level without losing sight of the long-term plan for the player

Nuremberg and Zurich with concrete interest

According to Sky, 1. FC Nürnberg is a serious candidate for a winter loan. The second division club is looking for reinforcement in central midfield and sees Fernandez as an exciting option for the second half of the season. Talks between the parties involved are said to be ongoing, but a decision has yet to be made

At the same time, there is also interest from Switzerland. Grasshoppers Zurich would also like to loan Fernandez. The club has maintained a close partnership with FC Bayern for years and has repeatedly acted as a training ground for young Munich talent. For Bayern, a move to Grasshoppers would be a familiar model for carefully introducing players to professional soccer

It remains to be seen whether Fernandez will ultimately opt for a move to the Bundesliga 2 or the Swiss Super League, but one thing is clear: FC Bayern still has plans for the 19-year-old – albeit not necessarily in the first team in the short term. A loan in the winter could be the logical next step for all parties.
