Alex Gonzalez is quickly becoming one of the breakout stories of FC Barcelona’s pre-season after making an immediate impact on his unofficial first-team debut against CE Europa.

The 19-year-old winger came off the bench in the second half of Barcelona’s 4-1 victory, providing an assist for Ebrima Tunkara before scoring the team’s fourth goal to cap an impressive introduction.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Gonzalez only arrived from Damm towards the end of last season but has already earned the opportunity to train under Hansi Flick. He finished as the top scorer in Spain’s Division de Honor with 12 goals before adding another five after joining Barca.

Gonzalez may be expected to play for Barca Atletic this season, but he has wasted no time in showing why the coaching staff are taking notice.

Naturally right-footed, he is comfortable on either wing and is known for his pace, dribbling ability, intelligent decision-making and eye for goal. During his time at Damm, he also took free-kicks and corners, highlighting the technical quality that convinced Barcelona to bring him to the club despite interest from elsewhere.

His contribution against Europa reflected those strengths. First, he created Tunkara’s goal with an unselfish pass before finding the net himself following a clever assist from Toni Fernandez.

Another reminder of La Masia’s growing depth

It is still far too early to place expectations on Gonzalez, but Barcelona should be encouraged by how naturally he adapted to the first-team environment.

What stands out is not just the goal and assist but also the confidence he showed. Young players can sometimes try too hard during pre-season opportunities, yet Gonzalez looked composed and made good decisions whenever he was involved.

Competition for places in Flick’s attack is stronger than ever following the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, so a first-team breakthrough this season will not be easy.

Even so, Gonzalez has already achieved something important. He has ensured that the coaching staff will continue to watch him closely.

If he continues developing with Barca Atletic while taking advantage of every pre-season opportunity, Barcelona could have another exciting attacking talent pushing towards the first team sooner than many expected.
