According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Boavista have ceased operations after 123 years, the Portuguese club from whom Leeds United signed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 1997.

Hasselbaink joined Leeds from Boavista for £2m in the summer of 1997, scoring 42 goals in 87 appearances across two seasons.

Boavista won the Primeira Liga for the only time in their history in 2001. Financial turmoil followed their 2008 relegation.

After a later return to the top flight, they were relegated again in 2025. Their registration to play in Liga 2 or Liga 3 was refused. They instead started the season in the Porto district league, then withdrew after three games.

Efforts are under way to launch a phoenix club to preserve the name and team.
