Comeback Against Elversberg? Bayern Coach Kompany Provides an Update on Gnabry

Serge Gnabry has been sidelined from FC Bayern for over four months now. Coach Vincent Kompany has now provided an update on his fitness.

After his long absence due to a severe thigh injury, Gnabry could return to the lineup as early as the match against Elversberg. However, a final decision has not yet been made. As Kompany explained at Saturday’s press conference, a decision on his potential participation will be made later today.

“Serge Gnabry is training, but a decision will be made today. I estimate that he’ll be available tomorrow or for the match against Union,” the Bayern coach explained.

This means there’s at least a chance that Gnabry will be available as early as Sunday. If he isn’t quite ready for the match against Elversberg, a return against Union Berlin should follow.

Kompany is waiting for Gnabry’s green light

The 31-year-old’s own assessment is the key factor here. Bayern clearly doesn’t want to take any risks with Gnabry.

“We’re still in talks with Serge. He has to give the signal that he feels: ‘I don’t think anything will go wrong when I shoot or turn,’” Kompany said.

Only when Gnabry no longer feels any discomfort during these movements will he be considered fully available again. This means the final decision on a possible comeback against Elversberg rests with the player himself.

Otherwise, there are no absences at FC Bayern

Aside from Gnabry, Kompany has a full squad to draw from for the away game in Saarland. “Otherwise, everyone is healthy and available,” confirmed the 40-year-old.

Given the standings, this is good news for Bayern. Ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga match, they are currently trailing SV Elversberg.

If Gnabry is finally able to play again by then, Bayern should head to Saarland with even greater confidence.
