It’s hardly a secret that Max Dowman’s goal on Saturday made him the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer, but it wasn’t public knowledge until a couple of days later that the former record holder had been there at the Emirates Stadium watching Dowman break it.

James Vaughan originally set the record aged 16 and 271 days back in 2005, scoring for Everton against Crystal Palace.

In a funny coincidence, Vaughan then decided to attend Everton’s match against Arsenal on Saturday, giving his son the chance to watch his first away game.

“We were in the stadium, and I had a feeling all day,” Vaughan admitted. “I’d known for a while, to be honest with you, if I’m truthful I know how good Max is.

“To be in the stadium, with my little boy watching, I think he was a little bit disappointed but for me, I couldn’t think of a better player to break it.

“I’ve watched [Dowman] for a few years now and one thing you don’t want to do is put too much pressure on him. His life’s going to change from this day forward, but he’s a special talent, I expect to see massive things for him in the future.”

Vaughan was an Everton youth when he watched Wayne Rooney become the Premier League’s record goalscorer against Arsenal, then Vaughan broke the record with Everton himself, before watching Max Dowman break it again for Arsenal against Everton. It’s funny how these things play out.

It’s nice of the former Everton man to have some kind words to say about Dowman, and that he doesn’t seem to hold any bitterness about losing the record.

Hopefully the Arsenal youngster can fulfil his potential and become an understandable player to lose a record to.
