Flamengo will finally learn their Conmebol Libertadores quarter-final opponents tonight, when Independiente del Valle face Tolima at 21:30 Brasilia time. They are the only side already through to the last eight still awaiting their rivals.

According to Globo.com, the club plan a combined trip after playing Remo in Belém on 6 September, continuing straight to either Ecuador or Colombia. The first legs are scheduled between 8 and 10 September.

If Independiente del Valle progress, Flamengo must deal with the 2,850 metres of altitude in Quito at Estadio Banco Guayaquil, so adaptation will be required.

If Tolima advance, the route involves a flight to Bogotá then an almost 200 kilometre coach leg to Ibagué for Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro. In both cases, Conmebol approval for stadium use is still awaited.

The tie concludes now because that game, and Independiente Santa Fé v River Plate in the Copa Sudamericana, were postponed after a powerful earthquake in Colombia that killed more than 100 people. The first leg ended 1-0 to the Ecuadorians away.

The quake struck near San José del Palmar in western Colombia at a depth of 110 km. The town lies about 230 km from Bogotá and about 150 km from Medellín and Cali. An aftershock of magnitude 5.0 at 100 km depth followed about an hour later, the strongest recorded in the country in the past decade.
