Former Sunderland captain Dan Neil is weighing up his next move as his contract ends this summer, with talks with Rangers reported. According to Sunderland Echo, the Ibrox club are ‘set to open talks’ over a possible move.

Neil effectively drew a line under his time at his boyhood club in January by joining Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the season. He made 17 appearances and helped Kieran McKenna’s side secure promotion as Championship runners-up.

A permanent switch to Portman Road is not expected this summer as his Sunderland deal expires.

In a message confirming his departure, the Academy of Light graduate thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud of what they achieved together, and described captaining Sunderland as a boyhood dream. He added he remains a lifelong fan and is excited for what comes next.

Coventry City are believed to have shown interest as Premier League newcomers after winning the Championship. The report also says a move to Glasgow could appeal, with the chance to help Danny Rohl’s side play in Europe and challenge Celtic and Hearts for domestic silverware.
