Former Sunderland captain Dan Neil faces a major call on his future as his contract expires this summer. According to Sunderland Echo, Rangers are set to open talks over a possible move to Ibrox.
Neil effectively ended his time at his boyhood club in January by agreeing a loan to Ipswich Town for the remainder of the season. He made 17 appearances as Kieran McKenna’s side finished runners-up and clinched promotion to the Premier League.
A permanent switch to Portman Road is not expected to be on the agenda this summer as his Sunderland deal comes to an end.
Coventry City are believed to have shown interest as they prepare for life in the Premier League after being crowned Championship winners.
Reports add that a move to Glasgow could appeal, with the chance to help Danny Rohl’s side compete in Europe and to challenge Celtic and Hearts for major domestic silverware.
In a farewell message, the Academy of Light graduate thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to have helped take Sunderland back to the Premier League, and called captaining the club a boyhood dream. A lifelong fan, he added he is excited for what comes next.
