Former Sunderland captain Dan Neil is reportedly in line for talks with Rangers as he weighs a major decision over his future, with Coventry City also interested.

According to Sunderland Echo, Rangers are set to open discussions over a possible move, which could appeal given the prospect of European football and a domestic challenge against Celtic and Hearts under Danny Rohl. Coventry, newly promoted after winning the Championship, are also said to be keen.

Neil’s Black Cats contract expires this summer. He effectively drew a line under his time at his boyhood club in January, agreeing a loan to Ipswich Town for the remainder of the season.

He made 17 appearances in Suffolk as Kieran McKenna’s side finished runners-up and returned to the Premier League, sealing a second consecutive promotion for the midfielder. A permanent switch to Portman Road is not expected this summer.

In a farewell message, the Academy of Light graduate thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to help take Sunderland back to the Premier League, and described captaining the club as a boyhood dream. He added that, as a lifelong fan, he is excited for what comes next.
