Austin scored 61 goals in 148 games for QPR, with the 36-year-old even notching 18 back in the 2014/15 Premier League season. He was on Sky Sports punditry duties for the last round of Championship fixtures before Christmas.

His former side were facing Marti Cifuentes for the first time since leaving the club for recently-relegated Leicester, with QPR ahead after just two minutes via Koki Saito. Richard Kone and Karamoko Dembele then put them in total control after just 33 minutes.

Amadou Mbengue's goal on the stroke of half-time put the game to bed, in spite of Leicester's consolation goal in the second half. It puts Julien Stephan's side one point and one place outside of the play-off places heading into Christmas.

Austin is one of the best strikers in QPR's recent history and he was watching on as Kone bagged his fifth of the season. Rumarn Burrell, his strike partner, notched two assists to add to his nine goals for the side since arriving from Burton Albion.

However, Austin was more focused on the result against the recently-relegated side and what that means ahead of Christmas Day. He said: "What a result for @QPR merry Christmas Rs fans 🔵⚪️"

The result took them above Leicester, with Cifuentes' side dropping to 13th. The Foxes are the lowest-ranked of the relegated teams, with Ipswich Town third and Southampton 11th. They are four points adrift of the play-offs after 22 matches.

Boxing Day sees Leicester host Watford, with QPR traveling to Hampshire to face Portsmouth. With Millwall playing Ipswich and Stoke City facing Preston North End, it's an opportunity for both to make some ground on teams in and around them.

Reacting to the defeat yesterday, Cifuentes spoke positively regarding what his former club managed to do this his new side on the pitch. Speaking via the BBC, he said: “Really, really angry. Really disappointed about the first half.

"We played below the standard, and we get punished. Credit to QPR, they did really well. Exactly the kind of game that we knew they like. They were aggressive, strong on duels. We got punished.

"The way we concede the [first] three goals is very poor.”
