Santiago Sosa was given a warm farewell by Racing supporters at a packed Cilindro in Avellaneda, with a switch to Vasco close. The midfielder is leaving a club where he became highly regarded.

According to Globo.com, the agreement is virtually sealed and the 27-year-old is expected to sign on Monday. The fee is a little over US$ 7 million, around R$ 35.5 million, with an upfront instalment and the remainder due from next year.

Sosa joined Racing in 2024 after an inconsistent spell at Atlanta United and quickly earned a place on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Coaches Gustavo Costas and Juan Pablo Vojvoda often used him as a libero, dropping in as a third centre-back in defence. In possession, he stepped into midfield to improve progression and passing, aided by strong aerial ability.

Racing reporter Leo Ojeda highlighted leadership as Sosa’s defining trait and considers him most effective as a libero, though he can operate in midfield. He said Racing will miss him but feels a change of scene could suit him, and that Sosa could contribute tactically and inside the dressing room.

Sosa won the Copa Sudamericana with Racing. He missed the Recopa through an injury that kept him out for several months.
