Jon Balda was discharged from hospital on Saturday, 12 days after being admitted following a heavy blow to his spleen during Sanse’s match at Huesca on 11 May. He had been at Hospital Donostia since Tuesday and will now continue his recovery.
According to Diario Vasco, the 24-year-old wing-back underwent abdominal surgery on 12 May at Zaragoza’s Hospital Servet, hours after an accidental collision with team-mate Kazunari Kita. He was replaced by Unax Agote before the interval after worrying scenes as he lay in pain on the pitch.
His season is over, but there was a lift as he watched from his Zaragoza hospital bed while his team sealed promotion in stoppage time at Anoeta against Mirandés thanks to a Dani Díaz goal.
He could not join the celebrations in person, yet took part virtually, holding a video call with close friend and team-mate Mikel Rodríguez while the dressing room erupted.
Balda is under contract with Real Sociedad until 2028 after an October renewal. The expectation is that, once recovered, he will take part as normal in the first team’s next pre-season under Matarazzo, aiming to earn a place.
