Jonathan Tah is one of the best central defenders in Germany today. The new signing from FC Bayern won the national treble in his first season in Munich and is also one of the leading players in the national team. This makes a recent confession by the 30-year-old all the more surprising: he too has been accompanied by self-doubt throughout his career
Tah’s sporting career was almost exemplary for a long time: he made the leap into the Bundesliga as a teenager at Hamburger SV, later developed into one of the most consistent defenders in Europe at Bayer Leverkusen and established himself permanently in the German national team
But there were also difficult moments behind this success story
In an interview with the DFB Journal , the defender has now provided a rare insight into his thoughts
„There were moments when I sometimes questioned myself more and thought, maybe what I’m doing isn’t enough. Maybe the talent I’ve been given isn’t enough and others are better,“ explained Tah
Such thoughts are not uncommon, especially in a competitive society like professional soccer, and even players at the highest level experience phases in which they question their own path
Looking back, Tah has realized that he sometimes allowed himself to be influenced too much by external opinions. „I listened too much when others talked about me,“ admitted the international

In the end, it was his own confidence in his own abilities that made the decisive difference. „Whenever I stayed true to myself, I was one hundred percent convinced that this path was the right one for me. That I had what it takes to play soccer at the highest level.“
That’s why the doubts were never deep enough to really throw him off track. „So deep down, I had no doubts.“
Anyone who watched Tah in his first season at FC Bayern certainly didn’t see any signs of insecurity. The central defender presented himself as a leader from the outset and gave the record champions‘ defense significantly more stability
Together with Dayot Upamecano, he formed one of the strongest central defensive duos in Europe. His calmness on the ball, his strength in tackles and his leadership qualities quickly made him an important component in Vincent Kompany’s system
Tah is currently focusing on the 2026 World Cup with the German national team, where he will be one of the regular players and provide stability to the defense
After that, the next big challenge awaits: after winning the domestic treble, the defender now wants to attack internationally with FC Bayern and realize his dream of winning the Champions League
The statements show impressively that even established world-class players are not free from self-doubt. Ultimately, the decisive factor is how you deal with them – and this is precisely where Jonathan Tah seems to have found one of his greatest strengths.
