Mamadou Sarr arrived in San Sebastián at midday to become Real Sociedad’s first signing of the season. He checked into the Hotel Barceló Costa Vasca and was due to head to Policlínica Gipuzkoa for a medical. He said he was very happy to join La Real.

Diario Vasco reports that Real have agreed a loan with Chelsea for the 20-year-old centre-back, with no option to buy.

With the squad in Madrid for Wednesday’s match at Real Madrid, it remains to be seen whether Sarr can train on Thursday under Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Sarr has been brought in to bolster the txuri-urdin defence. He is a right-sided centre-half with notable height, something the club has lacked since the departures of Le Normand and Merino.

He is quick in open spaces, a trait well suited to Matarazzo’s approach.
