Matias Soulé has cast doubt on his Roma future, responding “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know” amid links to the Premier League and Sunderland.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Argentine winger gave the reply at an airport after returning to Italy for pre-season with Roma. He said he had “just arrived” and declined to send a message to supporters.
Sunderland have been linked as Régis Le Bris targets a right-sided attacker, and the situation appears to be developing. Soulé’s agent, Martin Guastadisegno, is reported to have travelled to England for meetings with Sunderland and Fulham over a possible move.
Roma are believed to want around €35million, roughly £30million. Soulé’s remaining book value is reportedly about €15.5million, so a sale at that price would deliver a notable profit.
An approach from Sunderland has been said to be under serious consideration by the player, who is understood to be attracted by the Premier League. Sunderland can also offer Europa League football after finishing seventh last season, though Fulham and others could compete for his signature.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26million after the club beat Leicester City to his signature. He made 41 appearances last season, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists as Roma secured a return to the Champions League. Sunderland transfer chief Florent Ghisolfi helped bring him to Roma, a link that could aid any talks if interest progresses.
