Matias Soulé has delivered a seven-word update on his Roma future, stoking talk of a Premier League move amid £30million Sunderland interest. The Argentine spoke on arrival in Italy for pre-season.
According to Sunderland Echo, asked if he expected to stay at Roma, the 23-year-old replied: “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.”
He added that he had just arrived and declined to send a message to supporters. Régis Le Bris is targeting reinforcements on the right and Sunderland have been linked.
While initial contact was said to be tentative, the situation appears to have developed, with his agent Martin Guastadisegno reported to have travelled to England for talks with Sunderland and Fulham.
Roma are thought to want around €35million, roughly £30million, and his remaining book value is reportedly €15.5million, so a sale at that price would produce a significant profit.
An approach from Sunderland would reportedly receive serious consideration, with Soulé understood to be attracted by the prospect of playing in the Premier League. Sunderland can also offer Europa League football after finishing seventh last season, though Fulham and others could compete for his signature.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26million, around £22million, after they beat Leicester City to his signing. He made 41 appearances last season, scoring seven and supplying eight assists as Roma secured a return to the Champions League.
