Nottingham Forest have terminated Edu's contract, ending a brief and turbulent spell that coincided with a slide into a relegation fight and constant managerial upheaval.

According to The Athletic, the 48-year-old exited just over a year after arriving as global head of football to spearhead an ambitious multi-club project. He had effectively been sidelined for months, not attending a match since February or visiting the City Ground or training base since early March amid reports of his impending departure.

Forest do not intend to appoint a direct replacement or formally announce his exit, with Chief Football Officer George Syrianos already handling expanded duties. His elevation also helped plug the operational gap left by Ross Wilson's move to Newcastle United in October last year.

Edu's stint unravelled during a chaotic campaign. After pushing for a Champions League place under Nuno Espirito Santo, a falling out between manager and director triggered Nuno's departure and Forest plunged into a survival battle. Ange Postecoglou lasted 39 days before Sean Dyche took over and was dismissed in February, then Vitor Pereira was briefly appointed before Oliver Glasner replaced him.

Recruitment was widely criticised as several high-profile signings failed to deliver, with Omari Hutchinson, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko among those unable to make a sustained impact.

Edu had previously earned plaudits at Arsenal, where he became the club's first technical director in 2019, appointed former team-mate Mikel Arteta later that year, and was promoted to sporting director in November 2022 before resigning in November 2024.
