The Conseil national de l'éthique has referred Monaco forward Paris Brunner to the Ligue de football professionnel’s disciplinary commission after his controversial goal celebration at Strasbourg, and he could face suspension.

According to L'Équipe, the CNE acted on Monday lunchtime following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at La Meinau. After scoring a superb goal against Strasbourg, the 20-year-old mimed drawing a knife across his throat.

CNE president Frédéric Thiriez said the body can open cases on its own without a complaint or match reports, and that it chose to do so. He added the gesture could breach the ethics charter’s principle of exemplarity, stressing the disciplinary commission will assess the facts and decide whether to sanction.

Under the disciplinary code, article 4 sets a one-match ban for excessive or inappropriate behaviour. If the commission were to apply article 8 for intimidating or threatening conduct, the punishment would be around four matches.

Brunner said after the game that insults had targeted his family and emotions ran high after such a goal. He said he did not mean to be disrespectful, accepted the gesture was misinterpreted, and that his intention was simply to signal the goal had settled the moment.
