Ryan Reynolds has offered support to crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday after Wrexham’s win at Hillsborough.

Phil Parkinson’s side controlled much of the game and Sam Smith’s 58th-minute strike sealed the points, lifting Wrexham back into the Championship play-off places. The Owls are bottom on minus seven after an 18-point English Football League deduction for entering administration. According to Wales Online, the co-owner backed Wednesday on Instagram afterwards.

Reynolds congratulated his team on the away victory, then wished Wednesday luck, noting Wrexham have been in a similar position.

In August, Wrexham supporters showed solidarity during the reverse fixture as Wednesday fans protested against owner Dejphon Chansiri. The “Black and gold until we’re sold” message faced an initial block at the Racecourse Ground, prompting a backlash from home fans.

It proved a rare misstep under Reynolds and fellow actor Rob Mac, swiftly addressed when Mac urged Wrexham fans to wear last season’s gold shirt. The shirts returned to sale by the weekend, with profits donated to Wednesday’s Supporters Trust.

Before the latest meeting, Parkinson said Wrexham’s own history means their fans understand Wednesday’s plight, adding the club looked to be emerging from problems amid potential takeovers and praising its fanbase.

Reflecting on Bolton Wanderers, he described administration, embargoes and points deductions as draining, expressed sympathy for Henrik Pedersen, and recalled managing unpaid players and staff for five months.
