Steven Gerrard Rangers confessions are fascinating if not completely plausible

We know it’s the longest international break in modern football history, so we’re well aware most news sites and content providers like ourselves are not able to furnish you with the usual level of Rangers fare. Steven Gerrard Rangers confessions have filled some gaps in truth!

Hence a great number of our pieces are slightly less topical and pure Rangers than normal, simply because less is happening.

And during this break, old manager Steven Gerrard has been chatting to Open Goal after he lost a bet with Andy Halliday to appear on it.

It’s always intriguing to hear what the lad has to say, with two of his admissions being significant.

Steven Gerrard as a second option

And that is that he knows he’s a fall-back crutch. That he never wants to be offered the manager’s job again because it means the current manager is doing a great job.

The times Rangers have offered him the gig have been dark manager fails, the latest sacking after another bad run. Both times, for varying reasons, he’s turned it down.

But his admission of ‘someone like me’ as an option for the club is a confession. That he’s a plan B when things go wrong. And as much love and respect for the club as he has, Steven Gerrard never wants Rangers to be in the position again that they ‘resort’ to him.

The other confession was a big one.

Rangers confessions are intriguing

It concerned former Rangers captain James Tavernier, and indeed Gerrard’s motivations for picking him.

He admits that Tav was no leader, and was not a typical captain. But he wanted him to lead by pure performance. That his goals and assists were a big factor in the choice.

This is where Gerrard’s confession falls flat. The seasons back in the Premiership, two campaigns before Gerrard took over, Tav had just 9 goals and assists in 44. He’d found the promotion challenging to say the least, and Rangers were dire under Mark Warburton. 17/18 was a little better. 18 goals and assists in 46 was better, but still not exactly inspirational.

Indeed, the reality is the original reason Ibrox Noise reported back then was correct. Tav was selected because Gerrard didn’t want to disrupt anything or rock the apple cart. The captaincy was bouncing around different players and Lee Wallace had long lost it. Kenny Miller was captain for a spell after him, before Tav took it.

And Gerrard then decided to just leave it on him.

So if Gerrard was being honest with his reasons recently, it suggests his choice was misguided. He knew it was not a good call and decided to contrive a reason to justify it.

Either way, it is always interesting for Rangers fans to hear ‘confessions’ from former Gers about various things about their time at the club. Steven Gerrard Rangers confessions are no exception.

It’s just up to us if we fully believe them!
