Sunderland have condemned alleged online racist abuse of Brian Brobbey following Sunday’s Premier League win over Tottenham, and have reported the matter to the Premier League, social media platforms and the police. The club issued a strong statement and called for swift action.
Northumbria Police said they are examining reports of discriminatory comments circulated on social media after the game, and reiterated that discrimination has no place in society or local communities.
It is the third such incident involving a Sunderland player in as many months, after alleged abuse aimed at Romaine Mundle following the Fulham fixture in February and at Lutsharel Geertruida during last month’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
That derby was briefly halted in the second half after a report from within the crowd, with referee Anthony Taylor pausing play in line with the Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocol. A 45-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
Sunday’s meeting with Tottenham was a feisty affair, with Brobbey involved in several flashpoints during the 1-0 victory before attention shifted online after full-time. Sunderland said it stands firmly with the striker and will continue to challenge discriminatory behaviour wherever it occurs.
The Premier League said it stands alongside Sunderland and Brobbey, is working with clubs, authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to tackle discrimination, and will support investigations. It warned that individuals found guilty face the strongest sanctions, including custody, banning orders and criminal records.
