Sunderland have condemned alleged racist abuse aimed at Brian Brobbey on social media after Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham.
The club said in a statement that it stands with the striker and that racism has no place in football or society.
Sunderland have reported the posts to the Premier League, the relevant platforms and Northumbria Police, and called for swift action. Northumbria Police are investigating reports of discriminatory comments online following the game.
It is the third such incident involving a Sunderland player in recent months, after alleged abuse of Romaine Mundle following the Fulham match in February and of Lutsharel Geertruida during last month’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
That derby was briefly stopped in the second half, with referee Anthony Taylor pausing play under the Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocol, and a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.
The Premier League expressed support for Brobbey and Sunderland, has committed to working with clubs, authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to tackle discrimination, and says offenders can face custodial sentences, football banning orders and criminal records.
