Alleged online racist abuse targeted Brian Brobbey after Sunderland’s win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
A police spokesperson said they are examining reports of discriminatory comments on social media and condemned all forms of discrimination.
The contest was feisty. Early on, Brobbey’s challenge on Pedro Porro prompted debate about whether further punishment was warranted. He later appeared to nudge Cristian Romero into goalkeeper Antonín Kinský, angering the visitors, before Nordi Mukiele sealed the win in the second half.
After full-time, attention shifted online as Brobbey appeared to be targeted on Instagram.
It is the third such incident in three months at the club, following allegations of racist abuse towards Romaine Mundle after February’s Premier League fixture against Fulham.
Sunderland condemned the abuse, stand with Brobbey and have reported the incident to the Premier League, the relevant social media platforms and the police, calling for swift action.
