This June week has often delivered high-stakes finales for Lazio, from survival to promotion and cup runs, and remembers World Cup winner Anfilogino Guarisi. According to The Laziali, these dates carry milestones.
In 1986 at Catanzaro, a 3-2 win, the season’s first away success, ended relegation fears. In 1976, Lazio edged Inter 1-0 in the Coppa Italia second group phase through Re Cecconi, keeping hopes alive.
In 1923, Lazio routed Ideale Bari 6-0 to reach the Southern League final, and in 1951 a 2-1 win at Milan did not prevent the Rossoneri’s title.
Match in focus, 1983, Cavese 2-2 Lazio. After leading Serie B at halfway then stalling, Clagluna was dismissed following a 3-3 with Reggiana despite a Giordano hat-trick. Morrone took over, and wins over Atalanta and Catania plus a draw at Arezzo set up the finale.
In Cava de’ Tirreni, Miele’s diving header put Lazio ahead in the eighth minute, Cavese levelled before the break, and Marini struck in the 75th. An 86th-minute penalty made it 2-2, and Lazio saw it out to clinch promotion.
Rome celebrated at Piazza del Popolo as Lazio returned to the top flight. Giorgio Chinaglia came back from the United States as president, vowing supporters would not suffer in the same way again.
Guarisi, Filò, Lazio’s first World Champion, joined in 1931 after Portuguesa, Paulistano and Corinthians, scored 42 in 135, and won the 1934 World Cup with Italy. He later returned to Brazil, won caps for both nations, and died in 1974.
