Lazio defender Mario Gila has reportedly asked the management to sell him amid keen interest from Napoli.

Lazio Undergoing Defensive Overhaul

The Biancocelesti are preparing to sell Alessio Romagnoli to Al-Sadd, while Ivan Provedel is pushing to join Inter Milan. Therefore, Gila’s exit would truly mark the end of an era for Lazio’s backline. Like his two teammates, the Spaniard’s contract will expire in 2027, so this summer represents the club’s last chance to make a significant profit by cashing in on his services.

Mario Gila Asks to Leave Lazio

While there have been conflicting reports regarding the hierarchy’s intention and Gennaro Gattuso’s role, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla insists that Gila has already reiterated his desire to leave the club this summer, and that the new head coach has resigned to the decision.

Napoli Leading the Race for Gila

Gila has been linked with several clubs over the past few months, but Napoli have emerged as the frontrunners in the race, especially after reaching an agreement with Massimiliano Allegri, who had already plotted to bring him to AC Milan before his sacking at the end of the season.

How Much Real Madrid Are Entitled to Receive From Gila’s Sale?

Previous reports had indicated that Lazio president Claudio Lotito had set his asking price at €25-30 million. However, the Aquile will have to split the transfer fee with the player’s former employers, Real Madrid, who have a 50% sell-on fee.

Nevertheless, Il Messaggero sheds some light on this clause. Contrary to common belief, Los Merengues will not receive half of the transfer fee, but half of the profit generated by Lazio. In other words, the €5 million that the Italian club had paid to acquire Gila in the summer of 2022 will be subtracted.

Therefore, if Lazio were to sell the player for €25 million, the 50% sell-on fee would only be applied on the €20 million profit. In this case, Real Madrid’s clause would earn them €10 million, while the Biancocelesti would pocket €15 million in total.
