Txiki Begiristain’s right-footed strike in Zaragoza lit Real Sociedad’s 1987 triumph, and Beñat Turrientes, scorer at San Mamés, dreams of following and becoming a champion.
Goierri, the heart of Gipuzkoa and a long-standing La Real talent hub, has supplied players for decades. According to Diario Vasco, Beasain produced Juan Cacho, Salva Iriarte and Gorka Elustondo, Zaldibia Periko Irastorza and Benito Pérez Jauregi. Today the region is represented by Turrientes and Aritz Elustondo, as it was by Aitor Begiristain in 1987.
Begiristain spent six seasons at Real from 1982 to 1988, playing 248 games and scoring 34, lifting the 82/83 Supercopa and the 1987 Copa. He recalled being on the fringes of the Supercopa, but said 1987 is his fondest memory, notably the jubilant route from Vitoria to Donostia after meeting the lehendakari.
He also relived his Zaragoza strike, taken with his weaker right after a Bakero pass left him no option but to shoot into the top corner. Turrientes said he had watched it on YouTube, and Arconada’s shootout save, and that they want to make new memories in Sevilla.
Begiristain explained he skipped a penalty in La Romareda because he was exhausted, trusting others and Luis, which paid off. Looking to the final, he believes Atlético, by budget, history and squad, are favourites, yet he sees La Real playing with joy and thinks Atlético’s schedule could favour them. Turrientes added that the team arrive confident and ready to fight to bring the Cup home.
