Wolves are targeting out-of-contract Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil this summer as they begin a rebuild following relegation.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 24-year-old is wanted as part of that process. Sunderland have confirmed he will leave when his deal expires in the coming months.
An academy graduate with more than 200 Sunderland appearances, Neil helped the club climb from League One back to the top flight. He saw limited minutes under Regis Le Bris this season, then joined Ipswich Town on loan in January as he chases a second promotion in as many campaigns.
Versatile is the recurring tag. He is primarily a midfielder, mostly as a number eight who links play and drives forward, and has also filled in at full back. He is not a number ten, his seasonal best is four goals.
Neil debuted in 2018 and, from 2021/22, became a mainstay, regularly topping 40 appearances. He was handed the captain’s armband for a spell.
Tony Mowbray has praised his progression and said that, if he keeps developing, he will play at the top level and bring his qualities to a strong Premier League team. Neil has described his lack of Premier League chances this season as disappointing, and said he is driven to return. He added that summer plans are uncertain but he will give 100 per cent to try to get Ipswich back to the Premier League.
