Wolves are targeting out-of-contract Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil this summer as part of their rebuild after relegation, according to ExpressAndStar.com on Thursday.
Neil, 24, is a Sunderland academy graduate with more than 200 appearances, having helped the Black Cats climb from League One back to the top flight. He has been used sparingly by boss Regis Le Bris and has been on loan at Ipswich Town since January, chasing a second promotion in as many seasons.
It has already been confirmed he will leave Sunderland when his contract expires in the coming months. Versatile across midfield and capable at full back on occasion, he is most at home as a number eight who links play and progresses the ball.
He is not a prolific scorer, with a season best of four, but is regarded as technically tidy in tight areas. He made his debut in 2018, has been a regular since 2021/22, often played more than 40 games a season, and captained the side for a spell.
Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has previously said Neil was developing and, if that continued, he would undoubtedly play at the top level, ideally in the Premier League with Sunderland.
Neil has spoken of frustration at limited Premier League minutes this season and says he is determined to return to that stage. He added that he will give one hundred per cent to try to help Ipswich win promotion, while accepting the summer remains uncertain.
