Jakub Kiwior completed a late transfer from Arsenal to FC Porto during this summer’s window, although at the outset, even he was uncertain about how the move would unfold. The defender had been content at Arsenal, despite limited playing time, and was open to the possibility of remaining in London.

However, as Arsenal reshaped their squad, Kiwior became one of the players the club was prepared to let go. This opened the door for Porto, who viewed him as a valuable addition to their side. Still, negotiations dragged on, and Arsenal only sanctioned the move in the closing hours of the transfer period.

The Transfer Uncertainty

Arsenal had been pursuing a replacement in the form of Piero Hincapie, and until that situation was resolved, Kiwior’s departure remained in doubt. Matters became more complicated when Fabrizio Romano publicly reported that an agreement had been reached, even while Kiwior was still training with the Arsenal squad. This created confusion for both the player and his teammates.

In an interview with O’Jogo, Kiwior explained, “Fabrizio Romano announced ‘here we go’, and I started receiving dozens of messages and calls congratulating me. I was starting training… The players saw it on their phones and asked me why I had put on my kit if it was already closed. I refused to say goodbye there because I still didn’t have information about what might or might not happen. The next day I returned, already knowing I could say goodbye.”

Kiwior’s Departure and Arsenal’s Response

Kiwior’s account highlights the uncertainty and unpredictability of transfers conducted under strict deadlines. While Porto were confident of securing his services, the defender himself remained cautious until confirmation arrived. His decision not to say premature farewells demonstrated a professional approach to a situation largely beyond his control.

For Arsenal, securing a replacement before finalising Kiwior’s departure was a critical step. Allowing him to leave without adequate cover could have left the squad vulnerable, particularly given the demands of competing in multiple competitions. Ultimately, the timing of the move ensured that both clubs could proceed with their respective plans.

Kiwior’s qualities had been recognised at Arsenal, and while his appearances were limited, his professionalism and composure left a positive impression. His transfer to Porto marks a new chapter, offering him the prospect of greater playing opportunities, while Arsenal benefits from having managed the transition carefully.
