Ferran Torres has become the centre of a political row after wearing a red cap reading ‘Make Spain Great Again’ during Spain’s title celebrations, drawing fire from the left and praise from the right.

According to L'Équipe, the Barcelona forward, 26, scored the only goal in the 1-0 extra time win over Argentina, then paraded in Madrid in headwear styled on Donald Trump’s campaign cap.

The slogan echoes Make America Great Again and has also been used in Spain by Vox leader Santiago Abascal. On Tuesday, Sumar MP Alberto Ibanez accused Torres, via his company Eleven Future Invest, of acting like a vulture fund by buying 20 homes in Valencia to speculate amid a housing crisis in the Valencian Community.

Sources close to the player said the claim was unfounded, arguing it referred to a commercial building of about 50 offices rented to companies, not residential units. Vox moved quickly to hail Torres as a patriotic symbol, with deputy Carina Mejias dismissing critics and praising his answers on the pitch.

Online opinion split, with some convinced Torres was pushing a message and others seeing a parody aimed at mocking the US president, who was prominent at the previous day’s trophy ceremony at MetLife Stadium and even joined the team photo. The White House account on X later posted that everyone wanted to be part of the movement as video of the cap spread.

Torres, a devout Catholic close to Marcos Llorente, has not openly backed Spain’s right. Courted by PSG, he had publicly criticised Pedro Sanchez’s socialist government after the October 2024 floods that killed 237 in Valencia province, calling for change and venting that the state had failed while people helped each other.
