Pep Guardiola says he’s generally happy with the way his side performed in Wednesday’s draw with Monaco.

City twice took the lead at the Stade Louis II through excellent Erling Haaland finishes but a Jordan Teze strike and a controversial late Eric Dier penalty earned a point for the hosts.

While Guardiola was disappointed to not close out the game, he believes his players gave a good account of themselves against the Ligue 1 club.

It leaves City with four points from our first two Champions League games and on a run of four victories and two draws since the last international break.

“We played a really good game,” began Pep in his post-match press conference.

“We are trying to create more chances and concede few, that’s what happened.

“They have fast, fast players. We concede few chances and create a lot in the Champions League so I’m really pleased for that but of course we were close.

“We could not defend well the free kick, and we concede the penalty.

“Football you have to win and it’s down to the result.

“If you analyse the game, in many things it was really good.

“Step by step we will do better but many things, with the chances we found especially Phil in the first half.

“Many players did really good and we concede almost nothing. They defend so deep, so tight, we didn’t expect it with the way they have played.

“We played really good, this is my feeling. When it’s close, we have to defend the set pieces. We’ll take the point.”

The boss refused to be drawn on a comment about the decision to award a late penalty to Monaco after Nico was adjudged to have used a high boot when challenging with Dier.

“No, I have nothing to say,” he stated.
