Everton boss David Moyes says Jack Grealish (30) is likely to miss the rest of the season after suffering a stress fracture in his foot, Sky Sports has reported.
The 30-year-old, who is on loan from Manchester City, picked up the injury during Everton’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa on 18 January and may now require surgery.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton, Moyes said the club believe an operation is “probably” needed, although it has not yet been fully confirmed.
“If he does need surgery, it probably rules him out for the rest of the season,” Moyes said. “It’s really disappointing for the player and for the club. He’s been a big part of what we’ve done and we’ll miss him.”
Grealish had enjoyed a strong spell at Everton after a difficult period at City, scoring twice and providing six assists in 22 appearances in all competitions. His form had raised hopes of a return to England contention ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Everton are unlikely to bring in a replacement before the January transfer window closes, with Moyes admitting the club are looking but that new signings are “less likely than likely”.
There was better news elsewhere for Everton, with Michael Keane returning from suspension and Jarrad Branthwaite and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall stepping up their recoveries from injury.
